The collaboration between Sustainable Facility Group and Allpress Espresso’s Melbourne Roastery showcased the positive impact of strategic energy efficiency measures. By combining an energy audit with targeted solutions, SFG improved the energy efficiency of the facility, contributing to long-term sustainability goals while simultaneously improving operational efficiency and reducing costs to Allpress.

Allpress Espresso’s Melbourne Roastery, located in Collingwood, is an integral part of Allpress Espresso’s global operations. Allpress Espresso is a renowned coffee roaster with operations in 5 countries and over 2000 wholesale partners globally. Allpress is committed to delivering high-quality coffee and is taking major steps towards being a sustainable and environmentally friendly operation. The company sought the expertise of Sustainable Facility Group (SFG) to conduct an energy audit and implement energy-efficient solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Objective:

The primary goal of the project was to identify energy-saving opportunities within the Allpress Melbourne facility (comprising a roastery, café and office) and implement measures that would improve energy efficiency and sustainability. The focus areas were LED lighting upgrades and the installation of timer switches on heaters.

Energy Audit Process:

Sustainable Facility Group initiated the project with a comprehensive energy audit to assess the current energy consumption patterns at the Allpress Espresso Melbourne Roastery. The audit involved:

1. Data Collection: Gathering historical energy usage data and utility bills, to understand the baseline energy consumption.

2. On-Site Inspection: SFG's team conducted a thorough on-site inspection to identify areas of high energy consumption, inefficient equipment, and potential energy-saving opportunities.

3. Equipment Assessment: Evaluating the performance of existing lighting systems, heaters, and other electrical equipment to pinpoint areas for improvement.

4. Occupancy and Usage Analysis: Studying the facility's daily operations and occupancy patterns to determine when energy-consuming equipment is in use.

Energy Efficiency Initiatives:

LED Lighting Upgrade

Upon completion of the energy audit, SFG identified lighting as a major contributor to energy consumption. The team recommended a comprehensive LED lighting upgrade to replace outdated and energy-inefficient lighting systems. The LED lighting upgrade included:

1. Lighting Design: Developing a customised lighting plan to ensure optimal illumination while minimizing energy usage.

2. Product Selection: Carefully choosing energy-efficient LED fixtures that met Allpress Espresso’s aesthetic and operational requirements.

3. Installation: Coordinating the installation of LED lighting fixtures, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations.

4. Controls Integration: Implementing better lighting controls to further optimise energy use.

Timer Switch Installation on Heaters

In addition to the LED lighting upgrade, SFG identified an opportunity to enhance energy efficiency through the installation of timer switches on heaters. This involved:

1. Heater Assessment: Evaluating the current heating systems to determine their efficiency and operational patterns.

2. Timer Switch Selection: Recommending and installing timer switches on heaters to enable precise control over heating schedules, reducing unnecessary energy consumption during non-operational hours.

Results

The implementation of LED lighting upgrades and timer switches on heaters resulted in improved energy performance and ongoing cost savings for Allpress, as well as associated emissions reductions.

Sustainable Facility Group's approach not only enhanced energy efficiency but also aligned with Allpress Espresso’s commitment to sustainability, in particular reinforcing their position as an organisation working towards environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Sustainable Facility Group and Allpress Espresso’s Melbourne Roastery showcased the positive impact of strategic energy efficiency measures. By combining an energy audit with targeted solutions, SFG improved the energy efficiency of the facility, contributing to long-term sustainability goals while simultaneously improving operational efficiency and reducing costs to Allpress.

Allpress’ Nathan Slevin [Sustainability Project Executive]: “Sustainable Facility Group worked closely with us to help drive down our energy costs at our key Melbourne Coffee Roastery.

The new lights are fantastic and the timers they have set up are delivering real savings.

The process was smooth and professional from start to finish.”

SFG’s Ben Costin [Project Manager]: “It was a real pleasure to work with Nathan and the Allpress team, their sustainability ambitions are impressive, and Sustainable Facility Group are grateful to partner with Allpress for an important step on their journey. Also everyone should try their coffee, it’s the best in Melbourne!’
